Zimmer ... thanks for the tip. It took me awhile to find your 6/28/74 show, but i downloaded the recommended portion from the AUD source here at the Archive (really good sound by the way -- can hardly go wrong with a Jerry Moore recording). However, while very good, and largely intense especially beginning around the 16min mark in MLBJ, the US Blues is cut!! And so, i think i'll stick with the 32 minute segment of the 6/23 show (for now anyway) for a good morning jam, as i think overall it does the trick (for me) a bit better. Just really loving it, but thank you for your excellent suggestion!

I agree that this sequence contains some of the most intense music ever performed; however, I think that show as a whole is one of the most overrated, as other than the WRS (which they played virtually every show in 74), the rest of the show doesn't have any jam songs, not counting the hideous Phil & Ned noises. I also seem to remember some sloppiness associated with this show, but it's been a while since I listened to it.

Funny, Dick Latvala used to go on about how a particular show was overrated because, while it had some excellent playing on some songs, the show as a whole didn't hold up. He said this about 8/27/72 and also panned 5/8/77 for much the same reason (Dew is "can there be any question?" best ever, but show is not even in the top 20 for 77?). Well, this is a perfect example. How the China>Rider, Playin', Birdsong, and Dark Star (not to mention probably the "greatest" Greatest) from 8/27/72 don't make a whole great show, but the one sequence from 6/23/74 makes it good enough to top even 6/18/74, is beyond me. (Actually 6/18 and 6/23/74 are similar, with one good solid jam in the first set and a mega-sequence in the second, but the Dew from 6/18 puts it over the top).

I hear ya. I like them both but given a choice I'll take 6/18 every time.

I'll always be Grateful for Latvala's enormously important work in making the DP concept a reality, but as far as his actual choices in shows, well...sorry, but to me he's just another head with his own biases, quirks and favorites that don't seem to have much rhyme or reason to them.
